Berberine is an alkaloid found in specific herbs such as Indian barberry, Goldenseal, Oregon grape and Barberry. It has been used for thousands of years and has a deep herbal history. It's best known for its anti-microbial properties to support microflora balance in the gut and is an ideal choice for those who require a more gentle approach. Recent research has also identified other benefits including the potential to support blood sugar control and liver function.
Milk thistle, a popular herb used traditionally for hundreds of years, has been found to function as a Pgp (P-glycoprotein) inhibitor which means it inhibits the transporter that limits berberine's absorbability. Milk thistle therefore enhances the bioavailability and absorption of berberine. In addition, several clinical studies have shown that the combination of berberine and silymarin (an active constituent of Milk thistle) has positive effects on lipid and glucose markers.
