Gut health has become one of the biggest areas of interest in nutrition, but the language surrounding the microbiome can quickly become confusing.

For years, most people had heard of probiotics. Then came prebiotics. More recently we have seen increasing interest in postbiotics, while a particular gut bacterium called Akkermansia muciniphila is emerging as one of the most talked-about names in microbiome research.

So, are they all doing the same thing?

Not quite.

The simplest way to think about them is:

Probiotics = beneficial live microorganisms

Prebiotics = substances that selected beneficial microorganisms can use

Postbiotics = preparations containing inactivated microorganisms and/or their components

Akkermansia = a specific bacterium naturally found within the human gut

First: What Is the Gut Microbiome?

Your digestive tract is home to a vast community of bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microorganisms collectively known as the gut microbiome.

Rather than thinking of all bacteria as either "good" or "bad", it is more useful to think of the gut as an ecosystem.

What Are Postbiotics?

They begin with microorganisms that are then deliberately inactivated, while retaining microbial cells, cell structures or other components relevant to their effect.

Under the scientific consensus definition, that isn't quite correct.

For example, an isolated bacterial metabolite by itself does not automatically qualify as a postbiotic.


Why Use a Postbiotic Instead of a Probiotic?

There is no simple rule saying one is better than the other.

One attraction of postbiotics is that because the microorganisms have been deliberately inactivated, the product does not rely on keeping those microorganisms alive throughout manufacturing, storage and digestion.

This can offer advantages in terms of formulation and stability.

Research into postbiotics is still developing rapidly, and different preparations are likely to have very different properties.

Akkermansia is a particular microorganism. It isn't another category of supplement like prebiotics or postbiotics.

Depending on the preparation, researchers may study live Akkermansia, pasteurised Akkermansia, or methods of encouraging someone's existing Akkermansia population through diet or targeted prebiotics.

Why Is Everyone Talking About Akkermansia?

Interest has grown because observational and laboratory research suggested that Akkermansia muciniphila may have important interactions with the intestinal mucus layer and metabolic signalling.

Human trials have subsequently begun investigating these relationships.

Early studies produced encouraging findings, but this is an area where it is particularly important not to get ahead of the science.

A larger 2026 trial of pasteurised Akkermansia in people with metabolic syndrome, for example, did not find a significant difference in its primary measure of whole-body insulin sensitivity across the entire study population.

Interestingly, exploratory analysis suggested that people who started with relatively low intestinal levels of Akkermansia may have responded differently.

Another 2026 randomised trial investigating weight-loss maintenance also reported promising results with pasteurised Akkermansia.

That emerging evidence is interesting, but it also reinforces an important point:

Your Starting Microbiome May Matter

The future of microbiome nutrition may be considerably more personalised than simply saying:

"Everyone should take this bacterium."

A supplement may potentially have a different effect in someone who already has relatively abundant levels of a particular microorganism compared with someone who has very low levels.

Much more research is needed before microbiome testing and supplementation can routinely be matched with that level of precision.


Can You Feed Your Own Akkermansia?

This may ultimately be one of the most interesting approaches.

Rather than taking Akkermansia itself, researchers are investigating ways of creating an intestinal environment that supports the Akkermansia already present.

Certain prebiotic compounds and plant polyphenols are among the areas being studied.

This is another example of why gut health isn't simply about swallowing more bacteria.

Your microbiome is an ecosystem, and supplying substrates that selected microorganisms can use may help shape that ecosystem differently from introducing a probiotic.

Should You Take a Probiotic or a Prebiotic?

In fact, your normal diet already exposes your microbiome to both microorganisms from foods and substrates that gut microbes can ferment.

2. What am I trying to achieve?

"Improve my gut health" is very broad.

Someone wanting a general probiotic may need something completely different from somebody looking for a targeted prebiotic or working with a healthcare professional on a specific digestive issue.

3. Is the dose sensible?

More bacteria or more fibre does not automatically equal better results.

4. How should it be stored?

Some probiotics require careful temperature control, while other formulations are much more stable.
